Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum

Bratislava, Slovakia

Danubiana is situated appr. 20 km south of Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The museum was founded by Gerard Meulensteen, an enthusiastic Dutch collector and art patron, and his Slovak friend Vincent Polakovic , a Slovak gallerist. It is often called “one of the most romantic museums of modern art in Europe”.

The museum was open in 2000 and since then exhibitions of many prestigious figures of the European, Slovak, and global art scene, such as Joan Miró, Sam Francis, Karel Appel, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Antoni Clavé, Jozef Jankovič, Rudolf Sikora, Miroslav Cipár, Vladimír Popovič, to name at least a few, have taken place here.

Danubiana was honored by many visitors from abroad, including such distinguished figures as H.M. Juan Carlos I of Spain and his wife Sophia, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, Queen Sonja of Norway, Albert II, Prince of Monaco and Princess Mona of Oman, as well as countless celebrities.

In addition to enjoying great pieces of modern art, the museum unique location on the borders of Slovakia, Hungary and Austria and surrounded by the river of Danube offers harmonious combination of museum architecture and a beautiful serene landscape changing with the seasons throughout a year.
